Almost nothing, and nothing for advertising
We use the minimum storage needed to keep you signed in and to remember a few reading preferences.
Essential storage
When you sign in, your session is kept in your browser's local storage so you stay signed in between visits. Clearing it signs you out. This storage is required for the account and newsroom areas to work at all.
Preference storage
A small amount of local storage remembers interface preferences, such as an in-progress correction submission, so a refresh does not lose your work. It never leaves your browser unless you submit the form.
No advertising or cross-site tracking
We do not set advertising cookies, we do not run third-party ad networks, and we do not sell or share reading behavior with data brokers.
Email links
Weekly digest emails contain links back to entries on this site. Those links may carry a plain reference to which digest they came from so we can tell how the digest performs in aggregate. They do not identify you to third parties.
Your controls
Your browser can block or clear cookies and local storage at any time; the public site keeps working, though signed-in features will not. You can unsubscribe from the digest from any email, and you can change beat and state preferences from the preferences link in that email.
